609 Martin Street: The Black house
At BWS LLC, we are dedicated to creating spaces that honor the past, present, and future of our community. A prime example of this commitment is our transformation of 609 Martin Street, affectionately known as “The Black house.”
Historical Significance vs. Modern Restoration
Originally constructed in 1900, this 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 2,312 sq. ft. residence served as a boarding house, reflecting the architectural and cultural essence of its era. By 2015, the property had fallen into disrepair, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for revitalization.
Upon acquiring the property in 2015 for $66,000, we embarked on an extensive restoration project. Our goal was to preserve the home’s historic character while integrating modern amenities to meet contemporary living standards. This endeavor not only restored the building’s former glory but also enhanced its value, with current estimates placing it at approximately $420,000.
Community Impact and Future Vision
Beyond its physical transformation, The Black Mansion plays a pivotal role in our talent retention initiative. By offering the property on platforms like Airbnb, family and community events we provide guests with an immersive experience of Greensboro’s rich history and vibrant future. This initiative aims to attract young professionals, showcasing the potential of living, working, and investing in our community.
In essence, 609 Martin Street stands as a testament to our philosophy: honoring historical significance while embracing modernity, all in service of a thriving community.
